“Helping During Crisis: Mental Health & Empathetic Listening”

    Presented by: Lisa Schaefer, MSE

We are experiencing an international health crisis, people are scared. The SOP’s of many businesses are changing quickly and even drastically. Colleagues may be feeling a loss of control and are looking to others to acknowledge and support them during these major changes. As HR Professionals, it is essential to understand the importance of the grief cycle and empathetic listening. When you can accurately hear and understand the core emotional feelings inside a person, the more they trust you.

                                             In this presentation, participants will:

    • Learn the difference between empathy and sympathy and practice empathetic language
    • Understand the emotional stages people are experiencing by discussing the grief cycle
    • Develop techniques to acknowledge people’s fears and respond with effective phrases the reassure staff.
    • Learn how to practice steps of crisis intervention including creating awareness, providing support, providing psychological safety and moving towards acceptance.
