    HR Legal Pitfalls: Dos & Don’ts

    Tami Young & Sarah Hall’s HR Legal Pitfalls: Dos & Don’ts is a workshop specially designed for MVHRA members. Attendees will acquire valuable training aimed at helping Human Resource Professionals understand the growing complexity of legal compliance for employers, and provide an overview of the law on key trends along with instruction on how to manage through them.

    Upon completion of this workshop, learners will be able to:

    • Identify the Human Resource professional’s role in minimizing legal risk.
    • Describe several legal trends that employers commonly face.
      • Discrimination litigation involving the unemployed, sexual orientation, and employer use of background checks.
      • FLSA legislation involving temporary and contingent employees.
      • Social media- what a policy can include, and how to balance it against employee’s 1st Amendment rights.
      • Iowa state legislation that is currently changing.
    • Identify changes in employee rights due to recent legislation, regulations and court rulings; and correctly comply with all changes.
    • Utilize industry tools and legal support to manage through legal issues.

    Speakers’ Background & Experience

    Tami Young, Skywalk Group Founding Partner

    Tami is a founding partner of Skywalk Group and brings over 20 years of executive human resources experience. Prior to Skywalk Group she served as Vice President of HR in the start-up and growth of a now publicly traded company. In that role she was responsible for developing HR strategy to support extraordinary growth, state of the art recruiting methods, benefits and compensation strategies, employee relations as well as overseeing employee development programs. Tami also directed the HR evaluation & integration of over 30 mergers and acquisitions.

    Tami attended the University of Northern Iowa where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration.

    Sarah Hall, SPHR, Skywalk Group Human Resources Manager

    Sarah Hall is a Human Resources Manager with Skywalk Group.  Her background includes experience in manufacturing, engineering, banking, technology, and other industries.  She has eight years of strategic HR experience in both corporate settings and as a consultant.

    Throughout her career, she worked with senior leaders in the development and implementation of HR policies and procedures, recruitment of direct manufacturing, sales, engineering, and technical professionals, training, and coaching management regarding employee relations issues, and designing and developing training programs that deliver results. She is experienced in lean methodology, customer service, and forging strategic partnerships with key stakeholders.

    Sarah’s educational background includes a Master’s degree in Human Resource Development from Northeastern Illinois University.
