    The ADA and the Interactive Process”

    Presented by: Rachelle Stewart, Senior HR Specialist &

    Nathan Stucky, Director of Faculty & Staff Disability Service at the University of Iowa

    Rachelle and Nathan will explain the employer’s legal obligations under the Americans with Disabilities Act and how to successfully navigate the interactive process. They will provide examples of the most challenging disability cases at the University of Iowa encompassing both physical and mental health disabilities.

    During this presentation MVHRA Members will learn about the following topics:

    • Identifying an employer’s legal obligations under the ADA.
    • How to identify an employee’s request or need for an accommodation and how to respond by using the Interactive Process under the ADA
    • Examples of reasonable accommodations

       

    At the conclusion of this presentation attendees will understand: the ADA interactive process, when a disability qualifies under the ADA and how to respond to an employee’s request for an accommodation in a manner acceptable under the ADA.

    Biography:

    Rachelle Stewart is a Senior HR Specialist at the University of Iowa and has worked there for 18 years.  She is part of a team that provides guidance and oversight to the University campus in the employment of individuals with health conditions through the application of the ADA and FMLA. Rachelle has extensive experience providing compliance training for supervisors. She received her BA from the University of Iowa and holds an SPHR certification.

    Nathan Stucky is Director of Faculty and Staff Disability Services for University of Iowa Human Resources.  Nathan and his team provide guidance and oversight to the University campus in the employment of individuals with health conditions through the application of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Family and Medical Leave Act.  He also provides planning and develops educational programs, employment policy and best practice, and services for individuals with health conditions. Nathan received his BA degree in Business Management: Human Resources and his BA degree in Music from the University of Northern Iowa, in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
