Presentation Title: “The Fair Labor Standards Act”

Presentation Overview: Jhomahara will provide an overview of the following major provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act: Coverage, Minimum Wage, Overtime, Child Labor and Recordkeeping.
Participants will learn about:
- Coverage and who does it apply to
- Hours worked issues of travel, training, on-call, waiting time, sleep time, meal, and break times – paid or unpaid?
- Overtime errors to avoid
- What can minors do and when can they work? How to avoid the most common child labor violations
- Recordkeeping requirements
Speaker’s Background & Experience:
Jhomahara Cook is the Acting Community Outreach & Resource Planning Specialist for the Des Moines District of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division. She is responsible for all education outreach and strategic enforcement planning for the district. Jhomahara has worked for Wage and Hour since 2015. In her official role as a Wage and Hour Investigator she conducts many complex investigations related to the Fair Labor Standards Act, Family Medical Leave Act, Davis-Bacon Act, Service Contract Act, and more. She is fluent in Spanish.
