    “A Diverse Population’s Value System”

Presented by John Romeo, Offender Development Workforce Specialist

The shrinking workforce in the United States, decriminalization of nonviolent crimes, protections against liability for employers willing to hire applicants with criminal records, and the rapidly spreading “Ban the Box” movement will all combine to create more job opportunities for reformed ex-offenders in 2016. John will offer his insights of how he instructs and encourages transitioning offenders to define their values, motivations and goals to become better employees, positive role models, family-focused and embrace their community. John will demonstrate through interactive lessons throughout the presentation how individuals can change and develop to follow their life plans.

At the conclusion of this presentation attendees will:

    • Have a better understanding of the employment and support services available to job candidates transitioning from corrections
    • Understand the techniques used by the presenter and how they may impact their recruiting decisions.
    • Understand how life plans, values, motivations and personal goals can help ensure candidates transitioning from corrections will have the necessary tools for long term employment potential.

John is an Offender Workforce Development Specialist (OWDS) for Southeastern Community College as part of Southeast IowaWORKS. As an OWDS, John’s responsibilities include assisting men and women transitioning from corrections enter into the workforce. John helps prepare them for job opportunities, by overcoming barriers to success through work assessments, job development, writing résumés, developing soft skills and support services.
