“Navigating the FMLA Waters”
Presented by: Rachelle Stewart, SPHR, Assistant HR Director, University of Iowa &
Nathan Stucky, Director UI Faculty and Staff Disability Services
During this presentation Rachelle and Nathan will discuss: knowing when an employee has disclosed a need for leave, when an employer can or should have an employee recertify, deciphering what is or is not a chronic condition and how to address suspected FMLA abuse and pattern absences.
The learning objectives of their presentation include how to:
- Identify when an employee has put their employer on notice of a need for leave
- Address pattern absences and suspected FMLA abuse
- Identify what constitutes a chronic condition
- Know when to require or ask for recertification
Speaker’s Background & Experience
Rachelle Stewart is an Assistant HR Director for University of Iowa Athletics. She has worked at the University for 19 years including roles as a Senior HR Specialist working with FMLA and ADA, and a HR Generalist in University Housing & Dining. Rachelle holds an SPHR certification, has extensive experience managing complex FMLA and leave cases and has facilitated many hours of employee and supervisor training on FMLA and ADA.
Nathan Stucky is Director of Faculty and Staff Disability Services for the University of Iowa. Nathan and his team provide oversight to the University campus in the employment of individuals with health conditions through the application of the Americans with Disabilities Act and The Family and Medical Leave Act. He also develops educational programs for campus, policy and best practice, and continuously enhances services for individuals with disabilities.
