“Toxic Leadership: Why It Happens and How to Stop It”

Presented by: Stephen Courtright, PHD Research Professor of Management and Director of Executive Education in the University of Iowa’s Tippie College of Business

Toxic leadership is associated with a host of organizational and societal ills. And if you have ever had a boss that bullies and belittles you, then you know firsthand the destructive influence that these bosses can have. But have you ever wondered why bosses behave badly in the first place or why toxic bosses seem to escape punishment -- sometimes even get rewarded -- for their behavior? In this session, Dr. Stephen Courtright, Director of Executive Education and Henry B. Tippie Research Professor of Management at the University of Iowa, will discuss his research on hundreds of toxic bosses and highlight how, by understanding the root causes of toxic leadership, HR leaders can address and prevent this problem in their organizations.

    Participants will learn:

    • Identify the unique symptoms, causes, and consequences of toxic leadership.
    • Apply evidence-based strategies for how HR can curtail toxic leadership.
    • The root causes of toxic leadership
